Cannot connect to sql server 2016 remotely

I get the following error when I try to connect" The target principal name is incorrect. Cannot generate SSPI context. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 0)"

I checked the spn via setspn -l servername and it matches my other sql boxes (i.e. they all look similar, correct host names) and when I tried to set the spn manually, it already exists.

I can connect with bothe sql auth and windows auth on the sql box but only with sql auth remotely.

also - This was a clone of a sql 2014 box that I sysprepped. everything seems to work normal expect remote windows auth.

Any of the gurus have a suggestion?

Thanks
