MS SQL performance in a VM

We have a primary SQL server that is currently a physical server. The main programmer who is also my boss wants the replacement to also be a physical server, but I am seeing a lot of information saying that IOPS is not a concern with a VM compared to a similar physical server.

The main databases have to do with a realtime inventory control and history program for millions of parts. We are in an industry that is highly time sensitive.

Currently, using Redgate SQL Monitor, I see very small average disk queues, except for spikes during certain specific times outside of normal business hours.

Any information or links to performance studies done comparing physical SQL servers to virtual SQL servers is greatly appreciated.
