SQL Server 2014 uptime and failover challenge

We are planning to deploy anMIS and Great Plains for our company. We have spec'd out a solid physical server to run SQL Server 2014 Standard sitting on Server 2012 R2. Now here is where my challenge comes. Originally we were looking at having a passive failover node running in Hyper V, now I am not sure if this is our best option. Our goal is a responsive system and high availability.

1) We are on Standard which knocks out Always Available Groups. Would be nice if this feature ran on standard

2) We looked at clustering the servers and running Active/Passive Failover. The challenge we saw here was that we would be forced to use a single share of the database which still leaves us with a single failure point. If I am mistaken please let me know.

3) We looked at database mirroring without clustering. However, this then requires a manual...
