SQL Server 2017 file location on Server 2016 VM

I'm setting up a SQL on VM for first time. VMware hosted Server Standard 2016 with SQL Standard 2017 on RAID 10. Setting this up on a physical server I'd want to set Transaction Log Files on a separate disk.

A Logical disk on same array doesn't make sense so setting up a separate disk seems like the way to go. I'd appreciate input regarding any experience / recommendations using a separate disk as a stand alone drive vs setting up Storage Spaces Direct - a new feature of Server 2016/19 I haven't used yet.

Pros / Cons? We don't really have much more of a budget to start adding another RAID array... and it seems unnecessary.
