Maintenance Plans not showing up for SQL Server 2008 R2

This is coming from someone not familiar with SQL Server so please bear with me.

We have an application that uses SQL Server 2008 R2 for its local database. I'm trying to setup a daily backup of the database and all documentation I read about is to setup a Maintenance Plan. Problem is it doesn't show up under Management in the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. I've verified the following:

• It is NOT running express. Its a full version of SQL Server.
• User account does have sysadmin privileges.
• Compatibility level is at 100

As far as I can tell, we should have this options, but I can't seem to find it. Any thoughts?
