Using SQL Server with ADFS on 2012 R2

Working on getting ADFS setup and in looking through the configuration options I can use the WID (Windows Internal Database) or MS SQL Server. We as a company have a couple SQL servers on hand and would prefer to use one of them for this in the chance some company down the line requires one of the features it provides over WID (found here).

Anyway, the directions I'm finding for deploying ADFS are vague on SQL Server and I'm not fluent enough to read between the lines. What's I've found states: "you can specify the location and the instance name of Microsoft SQL Server" in the ADFS config.

What I don't understand is how the two servers would communicate from there? Does it use the service account specified earlier in ADFS config? What do I tell my SQL admin for setup?

Maybe I should be asking are the advantages of the SQL server worth...
