MSSQL Server users

Can someone please back me up on this!!!

We have a MSSQL Server hosting a database for an ERP system. I am requesting a database user account and was told "We cannot create a read only user account to the database because of the ERP system doesn't allow read only access user"

What I am asking is direct database access to look up information and analyzing information, which is just a regular database user account. I am talking about only MSSQL User Account here with access to database objects.

I am totally lost at our DBA and IT director. Give me sa access to the MSSQL server, I will get the account setup in few minutes..........

Unfortuantely, nobody seems to value my suggestions. All of you DBA out there, please tell me I am WRONG. NO READ ONLY DATABASE ACCOUNT can be setup in MSSQL Server. What a big joke from our people here!!!
