SQL Index is 26 GB

I have a 60GB Microsoft SQL DB. This DB is owned by a third party who's software we used and is nothing but a performance nightmare.

One table in the DB is a document table and it is 26GB, that by itself is OK, however the index for this table is also 26GB and appears to be a straight copy of the table.

I am trying to convince the 3rd party that this is an issue and they need to address is as we have nothing but issues with this software and DB. But they keep making token excuses and saying it isn't an issue. Am I out to lunch here? I don't see any reason for an index to be the same size as the table.
