Upgrade SQL Server 2012 on Windows 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2019 on Windows 2019

Hi guys,

Hope this finds you well.

We have 2 SQL instances running on 2 physical machines, called sqlhost1 and sqlhost2. They in production at site A.

  • SQL Instance: 2012 Enterprise
  • Windows server: 2008 R2
  • 2 hosts are in one failover cluster (FCI)
  • Storage: Dell Compellent SAN

Recently we built a new data center (site B) with better hardware and installed VMWare vSphere. The goal is to virtualize the old SQL environment and bring the OS to Windows Server 2019 and instance to 2019 Enterprise. Here is what we have on the new site B

  • Windows Server 2019 Datacenter
  • 3 ESXi hosts on vsphere 6.7
  • Storage Dell Compellent SAN

The network is stretched between the 2 sites. Site B will be primary. Meanwhile, we would like to keep Site A as a secondary / DR site. I am thinking of the road map of upgrading the whole SQL environment.
