I am a volunteer at a non-profit that is still using dBase 4 for their membership roles. I would like to move into the 20th century and build an SQL database on our Windows 2012 R2 file server. Unfortunately, I am a novice when it comes to Windows Server and I have never used Microsoft's SQL Server. I managed mid-range systems until retirement, and it seems my experience with DB2 is of no help here.
My plan was this.
- Install SQL 2017 Express on the file server
- Install Access 2016 on the workstations
- Open the dBase files in Access and migrate them to Access tables
- Import the Access database to SQL
- Use Access to link to the SQL database on five user workstations.
I actually started messing with the database in Access, and that worked well, we were able to open the dB4 files without losing any information. We were close to replicating...
