SQL Server 2012 Backups

Situation-
I've joined a company and have just has a phone call from one of the users stating that they were unable to upload there data as it said the server is out of space. I have gone onto the server and can see it is completely maxed out (140gb), I have managed to find some temp files and log files to clear around 5GB so they can work for the time being.
I am not well trained on using SQL Server however need to get this rectified. I ran a program and can see that all the space is coming from .LDF, .MDF, .svclog files. I have read around about different model backups and I believe this database is set to FULL. I think my option would be too set my database to simple then shrink? But I am not sure, can someone please point me in the right direction as to how to 1. Clear space? 2. Prevent this from happening again.
