Software development and SQL Licencing

Hey spiceheads,

I have a debate going on so thought i would ask others...

We have an application that connects to an MS SQL Server, it has a dedicated service account to do this.

here's the debate:

Dev's are under the impression that a single User CAL licence is needed to be compliant. Because a single service account will initiate the connection to the database from the application.

My view is that if we have other users who are setup in the database and will authenticate / read / write to this database (through our applications front end which uses the service account to connect) that we would need to licence them also?

***NOTE we're not talking about users connecting to the database directly, rather users usingg an appliaction that connects to the database and they are setup in there etc.
