AD Groups on SQL Server

Hi fellow Spice-heads,

I have recently started out as a database / SharePoint admin for a fairly large construction company. There is about 30+ SQL servers and I want to make it easier for me to add support staff to databases without having to manually add the AD users. This is where AD groups comes in handy.

I have added the groups in SQL, assigned permission to the groups where it should be. I have since discovered that anyone in the groups, no matter what their access level through the groups, cannot log into SSMS.

If I define the user explicitly (not in the group) and assign the exact same permissions I had assigned to the group, they can log in.

SQL Server and AD server are on same domain, so group type being set to domain, should be fine.

Anyone ever experienced this issue or know what could be wrong?

Thank you.
