SQL - Can I use a backup of a SQL datbase locally on a machine?

Hi Guys, I am new to SQL and trying to test some queries. I have a backup copy of our current database and would like a way to be able to execute queries against it on my local machine. Is there a specific version of SQL I need to run? Or some sort of command to get it to run locally rather then from a server. Any insight would be appreciated; thanks in advance!
