New Sql Server Hardware 2012 to Eventually Replace Sql 2000

We have an existing 2003 AD network consisting of 6 servers as follows:

Exchange 2003

Sql 2000 Standard

AD 2003

AD 2003 Backup

2 x Fileservers

We will be purchasing a new server to eventually replace the sql 2000

We have 60 logins for sql2000 but probably 10-20 concurrent connections

At the moment we have 6 production databases of which the largest is 2.6gb and the others are

all under 1 gb.

This is purely an internal network.

Most of the users are enquiry only.

Existing server is an old IBM x3650 with 4gb ram and works perfectly.

I realise from an upgrade point that there is no direct upgrade to 2012.

I am trying to get a rough example of what type of hardware to run sql 2012 standard on.

Particularly Ram. I did speak to a local supplier who quoted me a server with 48GB Ram.

Has the hardware requirements increased that dramatically?
