We are looking at some new vendor software in our vmware environment that uses SQL. Our other systems that have needed SQL we used shared SQL servers which had core licenses with software assurance for license mobility rights. The vendor is telling us that they strongly advise against using a shared SQL server for supporting their software. They said we can use core or CAL based SQL licenses if we want to procure them ourselves, or they can sell us SQL run time licenses that are only good when used there software, but it is much cheaper.
My primary concern which I can't get a good answer on, is do SQL Run Time Licenses include virtual mobility rights by default, or should they not be used in vmware environments where the system can load balance the VMs based on workloads changing? I don't believe you can get SA for Run Time licenses, so...
