SQL Server 2008 Database backup size difference

Greetings,

I have not worked much with SQL and have something that is troubling me.

A client uses a software called e-mds. It uses a SQL 2008 database. E-mds support recommends running a nightly maintenance plan that does a full backup of the database, cleans up old files and that runs a T-SQL statement. That nightly backup is about 20gb in size.

I am about to move their DB to a new server. For testing, I did a manual full backup (In SQL Svr Manager right click the DB -> Tasks -> Back Up...) of the SQL DB and moved it to the new server. Everything works fine.

Here is my concern. The maintenance plan full backup is 20gb the manual full backup is 40gb. Does this mean that there is a problem with the maintenance plan backups?

I have compared the backup settings for both backups and they look the same. The compression is set to use server default.

Note: I have done this before with another client that uses the same software. I checked back and their SQL DB size difference is the same. Maintenance plan full backup 15gb, Manual full backup 30gb.
