Should I setup a physical server for critical application?

For the past few weeks the performance on our "ERP" server has gone from sufferable to reboot twice a day.
This software uses MSSQL for the data back end.
The software vendor recommends physical server with SSD for performance.
Currently I am running a VMware virtual server on a flash cache SAN.  However we are just getting horrible performance that requires to reboots a day right now. I don't mind buying the hardware, but I hate that I just haven't been able to get to the bottom of the performance issue.  I also hate the idea of losing the redundancy of a virtual server.
Windows server 2012 R2
MS SQL server 2012
Drives separated for OS, database and logs

Thoughts; should I just go physical or continue to try and fix the virtual?
