I'm about to start setting up a new SQL Server for use by multiple applications.
The different applications have different SQL requirements, I am running SharePoint 2013 which can go to SQL 2014 max, and Sage 200 latest version is supported on SQL 2016.
Sage will have a dedicated instance, so I'm looking at doing a side-by-side implementation, two instances 2014/2016 running on Server 2016 in 2016 Hyper-V.
I've done quite a few single instance SQL implementations in the past so I'm happy with the storage, memory and compute configurations for that type of install. However this would be the first time doing a side-by-side.
From what I've read I should start with the oldest version first, as there are shared components that are backwards compatible and these should be installed in order.
