Need to compare tables and return something if x = y

Table x will have data from user input on a web form. It will be in a format similar to what will be in table y. How do I confirm when I have a match? It's a SQL server running on Windows 2k8 r2. I guess I just need to know what the best method to accomplish this would be. Let me know if you need more info.
