canna work without your data

I'm supposed to automate a process and have patiently looked through the code, looked at all the table layouts and have a general idea of what's happening. However the staff member who wants this automated will not give me whatever they get that they have to "manually load" and don't ask because I have no idea if they're keying it directly into the table or what they're doing. All I have is what creates the end result which I don't know where to put it after I get everything programmed (e.g. folder, email).

Because I have a tendency of grabbing somebody by their lapels and demanding that they give me their data or their kitty dies, what's a polite way of doing this? They say the data is confidential but won't even tell me what the extension is at the end of the data file is so I have no idea if it's text deliminated or a spreadsheet....
