I have a question regarding upgrading our SQL database server. I am not an official DBA, but due handle a lot of basic duties with our SQL server. I know enough to be dangerous, but want to make sure my thinking is correct.
We need to update our SQL 2008 R2 server to 2012, both enterprise editions. Currently SQL 2008 R2 resides on server 2008 R2.
My thoughts are, I can spin up a server 2012 box and install SQL 2012. Then, after hours; I perform a full backup of the SQL 2008 R2, transfer the .bak files and restore them in 2012.
Are there any issues with this which I need to pay attention to? Anything I am missing? Is this recommended?
