My work has been asked to purchase a SQL server for some clients, and I have no experience on SQL hardware requirements.
All I know at this moment: there will be approx 50 computers connected to the database. Every few mins they will commit a 2mb jpeg picture to the database. Writing to the database should be considered more important than reading.
The SQL server is expected to grow to 3.2Tb of Database data in 10 years.
With just these requirements is it possible to make a recommendation?
I am thinking single Xeon processor...but how many cores? How much RAM? And most importantly, what storage plan? Raid1 for OS, 500Gb would probably be more then enough. But what about data storage? Aim for 3.5Tb in Raid10 or Raid6? Raid6 is known to have a performance hit on writing due to the parity write so I am leaning to Raid10.
