SQL upgrade

Hi,

Running SQL Server 2008 Standard (64-bit) as per information from the SQL Management Studioand need to be running at least SQL 2008 R2 at the minimum in order to install a new application.

SQL Server 2008 is running on an SBS 2008 operating system (shown as Server 2008 Standard FE in msinfo32). The license sticker shows SBS Prem 2008 which I think includes this version of SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition so I'm guessing I can't upgrade to SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition R2 using the same license key?

If not, (and I assume you can't still purchase SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition R2), it would mean moving up to SQL 2014/2016? Is the operating system that I am running supported by SQL 2014/2016? I can't seem to find this information to be sure.

That's a lot a different version numbers..

Thanks for any help
