SQL Maintenance Best Practice

Hello All,

I am a newbie to some IT functions for SQL.  My background is in programming but my employer has extended my responsibilities to include IT functions which I have little experience with.

So I apologize in advance.  I have been tasked with moving one of our database from a 2005 to 2014 SQL server.  I managed to muddle my way through that...

Now I need to add some maintenance plans to the db on the new server.  I know I could just mirror what's on the old server but I am interested in understanding what I'm doing rather than just copying something.  I have never done this before.

any good articles I could read or general best practices?
