SQL 2012 Best Setup for Hi-Availab and Performance?

Hello,

We're moving to a SQL Server 2012. Before we had a failover cluster, which although it provides resiliency, most of the time it just leaves one of the two nodes in the cluster idle and wasting away potential resources, all in the sake of having a failover.

I've read about AlwaysOn for SQL 2012, but I still don't have a complete understanding of it, and it seems like it provides resiliency and also mirroring, and offloads backup and reporting tasks to a secondary node, but from what I understand only the main node can have write operations done against and the other ones are just recipients of the mirrored info and are for Read only operations.

Is there any other setup I can have for the best performance and resiliency, with only two Win2012 STD servers, each with SQL 2012?

Thanks for your input.
