DBA Tips: Discovery and Asset Management

The popularity of MS SQL Servers have led to an increase in SQL Server sprawl in many organizations today. As a result, it can be really difficult for a DBA to track and manage all SQL servers, and a DBA might not even be aware of any new instances until there's a problem. And then, it might already be too late. So how do you keep track of all of this data?

  1. Find all the SQL Servers in your environment
    Make sure you have multiple methods to discover all SQL Server versions and instances in your environment. For example, many applications might take advantage of a locally installed instance of SQL Express, and you need multiple points of discovery since Express only communicates locally, is installed as a named instance, and has the browser service turned off by default.
