Giving External Developers access to an SQL Server

My company has employed the services of an external DB development company to help them make better use of the data stored in the application that pretty much runs the business. The data is stored in a 2012 SQL Database. I've now had a request to provide remote access to our Database Server for 2 accounts with access to SQL Server Management Studio, Data Tools and Qlikview.

This isn't something I've had to do before - looking at how the previous IT Admin granted access to external parties it seems he gave them an account to login to our VPN, Setup an AD account for them, and then added it to the Domain Admins group - I'd rather not put them in Domain Admin, but I'm unsure what I do need to do so that they can do their stuff on the Server.

How do others grant this sort of access?

Thanks
