OK, we are upgrading from a few Windows 2003 servers, running SQL 2000 & sql 2005. To a new Windows 2012 Server running SQL 2014.
The Server has 8 cores, so I understand that I need 4 core licenses (each covers 2 cores).
But I also want a failover server, so was thinking of getting the same hardware again and getting the Software Assurance for SQL 2014, which means the second server can run in passive mode.
Am I doing this correctly ?
Do I only need 1 Software Assurance License for the primary SQL server.
Is there another way for doing this ?
At the moment the costs seems to be get a bit out of control, we are at £10k for the SQL and £1.2k every 2 years for the SA.
