SQL Server 2008 R2 setup doesn't get started, fails with no error

I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on my Windows 7 (home premium) machine of 64 bit OS.

Whenever, I kickoff the setup.exe file, it asks me if I want to make changes, on clicking yes, the command prompt opens for a fraction of second and then gets closed. Nothing happens thereafter.

I tried running the setup as an Administrator, through command prompt (as an administrator as well) but same issue.

Then I followed this thread

and did what was suggested. I created the security and security.config.cch files in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Config folder by running caspol.exe -all -reset in command prompt and copied them to C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\CONFIG folder but the setup is still not...
