Cannot connect to the database master in SQL

I have 2 VMs running. One is a DC and the other is where SharePoint is housed. I am connected to and logged into the domain. I can ping both machines by name and IP. I finally connected to the domain, but now it states that "cannot connect to the database master in SQL". I am thinking it is a permission issue? I am a domain admin so I am lost as to why this is happening. Any other information you may need please let me know.
